I Want To Be In The Light

Romans 7: For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

I so wish that I hadn't grown up a Christian. Not because of some horrible experience in the church, not because I had awful parents (and I didn't), not because I was teased because of my faith, or felt like an outcast.

It's because I wish I had never learned how to act like a perfect Christian, even when my actions and thoughts and inclinations pointed in a different direction.

I love Paul's honesty with his struggle with sin in Romans 7. I love how Paul had the attitude to persevere, even when he didn't feel like much of a Christian. I was pumpin some old dc Talk tunes tonight, and "In the Light" came blasting through my sad excuse for a car stereo, and something struck me theologically. Sure, it's one thing to say that we want to be in the light, as He is in the light... but what steps are we taking towards it? Are our actions pointing to our wishes, or are we just being those "nice" Christians that we learned how to be at such a young and eager age. Yes, it's admirable to say that you want one thing, but eventually, you're going to have to be mature enough to take that step. Otherwise, you'll never grow.

I had an awesome coffee with my good friend Mollie tonight, and of the many things we talked about, she said something that alarmed me in my spirit. We were talking about life in general, and she says to me "Terrin, I don't see you struggle with anything, I don't see you questioning things in the Bible or with God, and I don't see you struggle with sin."

Wow. Do I have people snowed or what? The thing is that I've learned very well how to hide my emotions and struggles, and everything else. I have things perfected to a "T"... even to the point that people I'm good friends with don't think I have any shortcomings or fears or anxieties. If I'm not leaning on my friends and using them to keep me accountable and have a support in my walk through life... how much am I really leaning on Jesus to help me through my life?

I honestly wish I could be more like a Mollie, new in her faith, questioning everything, and wearing her heart on her sleeve, problems, sin, vulnerability and all. Things aren't always perfect... but they're dealt with, you know? So candid and raw... it's so encouraging to have that breath of fresh air in your life.

Now, don't get me wrong, this is not the part of the blog where I spill my deepest darkest secret with the lot of you, but there's just a few thoughts that go running through my head... if I desire to be more like Jesus, (and I really do), what steps am I taking to be in the light, as He is in the light? What steps am I taking to be so honest with myself that I can admit that I do have struggles with sin, and shortcomings/flaws in my life, and things that I can't deal with on my own strength?

And I blog about this to ask you the very same questions... Are you presenting yourself as the perfect Christian who has no problems, or are you being honest and accountable to mentors and friends you've surrounded yourself with? What steps are you taking to become more Christlike? What are you struggling with that you can get your friends to pray for you about?

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight"

/end rant

Any prayer requests?

My New Babies!!!!

So, about a week ago I mentioned that my guitars were stolen from the church, and it was a very sad occasion for us all (except for Jennie, who said 'i told you so'... ouch...).

But today, I'm happy to announce that last Saturday the church's insurance came through and I was set to go shopping for some new babies...

and though I know Alexis and Mister can never be replaced, I do like the idea of having new guitars to stand in the gap and form new memories in the absence of my missing ones.

so without any further adieu, here are my brand spankin new babies.

the acoustic guitar is a yamaha apx 900, it has a thin body and is made of mahogany, and it has some pretty sweet electronics in it! His name is Thaddeus and he's not black, he's a mocha brown color, and he looks really cool under a bright light. And our resident Greek Geek Matthew will tell us all what "Thaddeus" means in Greek!

the bass is the same as alexis, but he's black now. and once you go black, you apparently never go back. His name is Clyde. Clyde has no special meaning, but it's a really beefy name, for such a hunk of a bass ;)

Anyway, here is their warm welcome into my world of music. Now, show some love!

-Peace out!

My Rant of the Week

I'm hungry.

How do I know that I'm hungry? A few things will tell me this.

1- I haven't eaten a proper meal today. I had some coffee from Tim's and a bagel

2- My head hurts, I feel dizzy

3- I don't have any energy

4- my stomach is going crazy!

Now really, the only thing I can do to curb this hunger is to eat. I can drink coffee and have the caffeine and subside it for a while, but I'm only going to be able to ride that for a while.

I can do something to distract myself until lunchtime, and cover up the blatantly loud noises my stomach is making, but I am still going to have a headache and feel dizzy.

Let's face it. The world has made a big deal about food.

From birth our life schedule revolves around food:

We have a right to food. We have a right to eat good food. We have a right to have food RIGHT NOW!

We are taught to recognize our hunger and to fulfill it immediately.

From childhood, we are driven by the necessity to eat food, and our desire to eat it. We know when we're hungry. We're taught how to recognize when we are hungry- we feel the effects of hunger. We're taught how to remedy that hunger by eating. We are equipped to quench that hunger by going through the McDonald's drive-thru.

We know exactly how to pinpoint, recognize and cure our hunger precisely and accurately. There's a science to it.

So the science of hunger tells us to 'fill'er up' when we feel these warning signs.

But how do we know when our souls are running on empty? What are the hunger pangs that our Spirit makes when it's hungry? What are the 'warning signs' that tell us to go and 'eat'?

I think the church has failed in teaching us to recognize this hunger. In the book of Matthew when Jesus was fasting in the desert, (you know... fasting... going without food for a very long and excruciatingly hungry time) and was approached by the devil, who basically said “cmon, Jesus! You're the son of God! You can turn rocks into bread! Just go ahead and do it!”

But Jesus understood something more important.

He responded with the pithy, but punchy quote from Deuteronomy: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Jesus understood that there was a hunger that existed in him which was larger than his hunger for food.

We have that same hunger embedded in us- we are experiencing the pangs in our spirit! We cannot live on food alone, but every word that comes from the mouth of God!

But we are feeding ourselves with garbage. We only recognize that we have unquenchable zest for life. We can never get enough. We can't find that God-shaped peg for the God-shaped hole, so we make quick fixes.

We patch up our hunger, distract ourselves from the noises in our spirit- oh what's some more tv, video games, time with our friends. Anything to fill up that time.

We deny the fact that we are weak and dizzy- we have no spiritual energy and find everything exhausting in life. Don't be mistaken, God set it up like this for a reason! We aren't meant to run entirely on our own steam!

We deny that our empty spirit is going crazy! We, in a North American culture are so unsatisfied with everything. We can't get enough of money, possessions, sex, drugs, rock'n'roll (pick your poison)... all because our spirits are flipping out because they're starved virtually to death!

Do you know what this really is?

It's Spiritual Anorexia. We are refusing to eat of what God has to offer to us!

But I want to say this to you right now.....

PERSON, FEED THYSELF!

Do you know how I can tell that I'm getting a little hungry in my soul?

I get depressed. I can't think of one time in my life where I was depressed and feeding my soul at the same time.

I get judgmental. I focus on what everyone around me is doing wrong. Suddenly I'm holier than everyone.

I get defensive. No one dares question me!!!!

I get unaware of my sin. In the bad way. I think there's nothing wrong with doing things in my own strength. I think there's nothing wrong with what I do that isn't helping God out. I make compromises in my character because I think I have better judgment than God does. I am no longer in need of his grace...

BUT.....

Once I have filled up on my word daily, prayed, worshiped God, been encouraged by my surrounding Christian community, I can make it through the day. I have fed myself. I no longer am depressed, judgmental, defensive, and unaware of how impossibly hopeless I am without my God! I am quenched. I am full. Belt undone, thanksgiving dinner “FULL”.

So eat up, kids!

Here's my proposal to you!

I would like to start a campaign against Spiritual Anorexia.

A campaign where we say no to feeding our souls with garbage!

A campaign where we say yes to the word of God, to worship, serving and giving!

A campaign where we encourage one another!

Will you join the fight?

Will you feed that hunger?

What will you look like if you do it?

My Second Week of Modules!

Hey guys!

So this week I took "Leadership and Administration" which was a wickedly awesome class! I learned so much about myself and how I operate on a team, how to deal with other types, how to lead from my strengths. I know now that I have a ton of books and such to sift through to really apply it to my life! I'm so excited about it!

Yesterday I went to see Lisa Bevere (John Bevere's wife) preach at a women's conference. Holy Cow. I so want to have what she has! If any of you have heard Trevor Meier preach about this, you know what I mean! She was just a phenomenal person, an exciting preacher, and wise... so very wise. She made me come to the realization that being called to be a pastor as a woman is by no means a lesser calling! In fact, I really feel that churches should have more female pastors... we have a different perspective and approach than men do!

But enough "gurl power". I would just like to say that seeing my school friends has definitely been fun! I love these guys to death! I've been staying at Nic and Jennie's, which has been pretty sweet, although it kinda sucks without a car, and being so far away from school and stuff.

Today I'm going out to Prince Albert to drum with the Ensemble, which will rule! I just love getting to play with Pipes! Man I miss that guy!

Anyway, I'm going to get going, as it's very hard to type quietly!

Ta!

God IS following me!

I was reading Nic's post, but I've noticed that God's been following me in a bit of a different way.

You see, I try to make it to church here on weekday mornings for the 6am prayer that they have. When I'm stressed, people can tell, because I am noticably absent from prayer, desperately trying to catch up on sleep.

But the flawed logic with that is that I am relying more on my sleep than I am on God!

Proverbs 3:5-6 says "trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight"

So, I'm going to trust that if I depend on God and am a responsible steward of my bedtime, he will make my paths straight!

So God, I'm surrendering my sleep to you! I will dilligently try to do my best to be in bed at a good hour, but I am depending on you to be my strength when things are getting stressful!
Amen!

Youth Retreat at Red Rock

Wow.

I just spent a couple of days with the youth and young adults from my church at Calvary Temple youth camp....

just... wow.

Dennis and I have been saying for weeks now that big things are about to happen this year with the youth. It was just awesome. We had pastor Alan come out for a bit, and he preached on Friday night about being a friend of God. Then he talked a bit about what happens when we say no to God.

I was superblessed with the rowdiest girls at the entire camp (I was sort of half camp staff/half counsellor, so they stuck me in a cabin for Friday night... I smartened up Saturday night and slept in the very warm and cozy staff cabin!). Mollie and I had our hands full till about 4 am with girls (such as Ainsley) saying "Terrin, Mollie, I have to go to the bathroom! There's bears outside! I'm afraid!" and our reply "go in twos and split up, the bear will only catch one of you!"

Saturday morning I preached on Nehemiah and compassion, preparedness and servanthood. It was good. The evening was the main event though. Dennis preached on "Destiny", then after that, we had a WICKED time at the altar (I got to minister on my guitar) and we just had a Holy Ghost time right there at the altar, and a lot of our kids got filled with the Holy Spirit.

I did worship for all the chapel times, it was fun. I have just come to realize that I really haven't lead worship all that much in my life, I'm usually the girl on another instrument. But lately, I've just sort of been drawn to doing it. So it was so much fun to do it acoustic and unplugged this weekend!

Anyway, I would share more, but i'm POOPED!

I'm leaving for saskatoon on next Sunday and Calvary is coming with. So I guess I'll see you all later!

until Mollie admits that I'm the gangster-est of all white bread gangsters,

Terrin

My Weekend!

So, about 3 months ago, while bored at work one day, Felicia and I decided to make our "100 things to do before I die" list. Now, there are some questionable endeavors on the list, but yesterday, get this...

I totally destroyed #81!

What was #81, you ask?

Well, of course, I have always wanted to see an NHL game.

So when I heard the Oilers and the Coyotes were playing exhibition at the MTS center, I immediately went to ticketmaster.ca and ordered up some tickets! It was awesome! Of course, my guest of honor for ticket number 2 was the endearing Brett Ramsey, who was happy to accompany me!

Here we are as a darlin couple at the game:

Brett is always so serious about hockey though. When the game's on, you shouldn't say much!

here's Brett telling me to put the camera down and watch the game:

...so serious about his hockey!

Here's an extra perk of the night as well:

THAT my friends, is Wayne Gretzky!

Don't believe me???

Check out a better pic!

So that's pretty awesome!

By the way, the Oilers won 5-0!

Here is another pic....

some people are very obsessed with the Jets coming back to Winnipeg.... throughout the night, people were yelling 'go jets, go!' and 'bring back the jets!!!'

i have no idea whether it will happen or not... i guess we'll see!

Later dudes!

(see you cpc people in a couple of weeks!)

My Friend Kalandra

Well, my dear friend Kali left this morning for Australia, and I have one thing to say...

LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!! (in napoleon voice, of course!)

we had a very tearful goodbye this morning with a whole group of people, but i think now that the saddness of her being gone is over, we can switch over into jealousy mode, because when her flight lands in like 2 days, she'll have nothing but fun in the sun!

i'll miss you sweetie, see you in six months!

My Week Off

Hey dudes and dudettes,

unlike most of my college friends, this next week will be a week of relaxation! yes, it's true, i won't be at cpc this fall, except for the modular classes! instead, i'll be continuing my wonderful internship here at WGC. things are just cra-zazy around here. we're twinning our services in two weeks, we just had a youth staff meeting, and school starts for our kidlets next week! AHH!

so i get a nice week of holidays to forget about my troubles. I'm going to Brett's tonight to watch some Rockstar: Supernova, where I'll be cheering my heart out for Ryan and Magni. Good times, i swear! Then I'm headed to my sister's house on thursday/friday to see the kiddies and of course, the main event, my sister. Who knows, maybe I'll see matt and the gang too if i'm lucky! Then the weekend i'm sure will be exciting, and i'll probably head to the dwelling place on sunday to see my old church friends whom i haven't seen since may. then, back to winnipeg for tuesday evening's PREMEIRE OF HOUSE!!!!!! (we're having a house party... get it?)

so yeah. things have been a little stressful around here. i was a little down on sunday, and my dearest mommy away from home called me on monday just to let me know that she loves me and that she was thinking about me and praying for me! how encouraging! i also spent an awesome night in worship again at the link yesterday, which was just so nice to be able to worship without having to worry about my responsibility. i could come and go as i pleased, and i was just refreshed by the word and stuff.

anyway..... not a whole lot else to say. have fun at school, suckers!

oh, and matt, sheldon and brett, you still owe me a survey!

Missing My Old Friends

*Disclaimer: this is an emo post*

Wow

summer is almost over.
My internship is almost half over.

I went to Sobey's before I came to the church today for spinach dip, and it reminded me of Nicole.
I received an email from my dear friend Jana today, and it caused me to miss her.
I saw Rebecca last week at a wedding, and the very short time that we had to have a deep conversation made me realize that I miss her.
Brett was in for a few days this week, and hanging out with him makes me miss him more when he's not here.

I saw Andew Plett as well (aka, uncle clarence), and he commented that i looked more grown up. little may he realize, but it almost made me a little sad. I miss those times where rebecca and i got away with pranking his house because we were the 'rowdy youth'. i miss staying up until four in the morning and having to be at work in a couple of hours....

but growing up does have its advantages. i don't really feel like listing them right now though...

But I went to the Willow Creek Summit this week, and it caused me to ask myself questions...
like why i want to be in ministry... do i really believe that there is no higher calling? do i believe that Jesus can use me to minister to the world around me? do i really believe that there is a difference between hoping for revival and inviting my neighbor to church?

what would be the difference between living an ok life and the one God has called me to?
would it be so bad to have an average existence? would the white picket fence ever be satisfying?

blah... don't worry, this isn't a meltdown. i know that God has called me, I know exactly what I am doing. But sometimes i just have to pinch myself to make sure it's all real.

My VBS-tastic Week

Howdy folks!

Today is officially day two of bonfire day camp, a VBS that the church is putting on.

I'm in charge of singing time, and I also help out in the acting department for story time.
Last night is going to be very hard to top. I dressed up as the innkeeper in the birth story! The scene is that these kids wake me up in the middle of the night, so I got to play a crotchety old man! I used House as my inspiration, and walked with a cane, shaking it in kids faces (no vicodin addiction though....). It was great fun! Gloria also did an amazing job telling the story of Jesus' birth and using the point that Jesus is the Light of the world!

Tonight is Zacchaeus, and I hope it will be just as good! Gloria and I are dressing up in one of those things where my feet are made from my hands, and my hands are Gloria's hands... I don't know... I'm sure you all remember gags like that from VBS's or Sunday Schools....

Anyway, I have some lines to memorize and a trailor to trash... and by trailor... i mean my office, and by trash, I mean clean... because it's been filled with messy messy things in order to prep for this VBS!

See ya!

My 12th week

Hey guys,

this week is officially weeks 12 of my internship here at Weston.

Week 11 was a very, very, very busy one.

Monday was my birthday, so I spent the day at home hanging with the family, which was very nice. I missed my sister and her family by like a day, which is kind of a bummer, since I haven't seen her since probably the week after Easter. The kids have forgotten who uncle Brett is! Hopefully I'll see them before the end of summer. Who knows, maybe I'll take a week so I can go and visit them.

Then, I spent some very long and labourous days getting ready for our garage sale fundraiser...
I'm pretty sure I inhaled about 9 pounds of dust. But... 60 hours of work later, we made over $2000 to fund some of our youth ministry, so I would say it was well worth it.

On Friday, we had a quiet night at youth and watched 8 Below. I was so emotionally and physically drained that I gushed tears at the end. The only person who had enough stones to say anything about it though was Gloria, so I didn't mind it all that much.

Hmmm... OH! congrats to Andrew and Starla. I must say, I was quite jealous when I heard the news!

But, you still have to admit, no one is cuter than this couple

(awwwwwwwwww!)

Anyway, enough self-glorification!

Next week Felicia and I are putting on a VBS here at the church. Week after that is Go-Carts night on Friday, and a Third Day concert the following monday.

What else... I dunno
Today has been fairly lax, as I am recovering from last week still.

TA!

My Happy Birthday!

Well...

I fortunately didn't have to endure the birthday bumps this year... and boy am I glad! That would have been a long ride!

Kids, just yesterday, I turned 22.

Yes. 22. I know, it's incredibly old.

I would say the best present I got was the company of my main man, and my family... plus, the ultimately cool book by postsecret from Brett! GO POSTSECRET!

Thanks for the wonderful phonecalls from Nicole and Mollie!

And for my birthday porkchops!!!!!!

Anyway, is that enough of an update for you???

My Kind Curry

Hey all!

summer is so close, i can taste it!

I love summer so much! my two favorite holidays are in the summertime!
1. my birthday
2. canada day!

woo hoo!

this past week has been pretty good, i must say! i've now been in winnipeg for 8 weeks. hard to imagine that all that time has gone by already! i'm 1/4 of the way through my internship!

Thursday night was my last night of having to babysit for addictions class! don't get me wrong, i enjoyed it a lot, and the kids were always a riot, but it was just another thing i had to do for the week! all the kids marina and i babysat are coming to vbs though, and they were all at the church picnic on sunday, so it's all good!

Friday was our bonfire night, were the kids burned all of their books. we had a good time playing at assiniboine park... iwas really tempted to go watch the cricket that was going on, but i refrained to build a bonfire, watch ultimate, and play touch the tree as well as red rover! i love doin stuff like that. especialy since i can now dress like youth again! huzzah for jeans and value village tshirts!!!!!!!

i didn't do much on saturday, but we had A WICKED hail storm come up out of nowhere. it was INSANITY. the streets were flooded!

sunday was the church picnic and sunday school graduation! it was so much fun! brett came for the day, and i got sunstroke. never again will i skip putting on sunscreen! I was deathly ill yesterday while trying to recover from it!

100 Things about me

1. I pick my nose without shame
2. I am interning at Weston Gospel Church in Winnipeg, and I must say, I'm falling in love with the place...
3. I love learning how to play new instruments, but I usually hit a wall of boredom and frustration, and try to master a new one
4. I probably listen to music less than 1% of my day.
5. I'm probably physically active less than 1% of my day, but that's changing now that I rollerblade more
6. I love cooking anything. I would rather cook than do dishes.
7. I love doing my laundry.

10. Before Brett and I started dating, my best friend Rebecca referred to me as a 'crush whore'

13. I am bothered by people who are fake or have large egos.
14. I am really close to my family, but don't talk to them all that often lately.
15. The only reason I started playing bass is because my brothers are all bigger than me
16. The only reason I started playing drums is because playing bass in the studio all by myself was really boring.
17. I hate being late for ANYTHING. In fact, if you're responsible for making me less than five minutes early for something, I will probably be very angry with you.
18. I am realizing more and more how annoying and selfish I must have been as a teenager.
19. I am still annoying and selfish sometimes.

21. I am very apathetic regarding my 4th year of Bible College
22. Brett tells me that I ask too many questions
23. I usually have a moment of weakness about every 6 months where I question what I am doing with my life and start making plans for an escape route. But God always wins out I discovered about a year ago!
24. My desire for doing ministry outweighs any of my other desires in life right now
25. I fortunately have a very understanding and patient boyfriend, who keeps me sane in tough spots like this!

37. My parents are weird. Seriously, meeting them will explain all of my oddities
38. I want to travel the world
